What Happens to Our Skin in Winter?

winter skincare

Walking in a winter wonderland might sound pretty dreamy, but for exposed areas of skin like the face, lips, and hands, the reality is that it’s a bit of a nightmare. So, why is this the case? Well, colder weather has lower humidity meaning there’s less moisture in the air and that dries the complexion out. Add to that, bitter winterly winds, which strip the natural oils in the surface layer of skin and the all-important protective barrier becomes greatly depleted. That spells bad news for the complexion.

Between the inclement weather, too-hot baths, indoor central heating, and the fact that winter bugs bring down our immunity, it shouldn’t really come as any great surprise that our skin suffers. Dryness, tightness, dullness, redness, irritation and chapped, flaky skin are all too common winter afflictions. And if you thought that you were out of the woods when it comes to UV rays, think again. In fact, snow can reflect the sun’s rays onto the exposed areas of the skin causing sun damage.

How to Keep Skin Hydrated in Winter

Many of us change our wardrobes in winter and we should do the same with our skincare. Adapting our daily skincare routine and using products with ingredients that support the complexion during wintertime allows us to meet our skin goals. After all, who doesn’t want to showcase vacation-ready glowing, smooth, youthful skin during the festive season?

Of course, you can cover some of these issues with clever make-up, like foundation, illuminators, blushers, and bronzers, but none of them are fixing the problem at its source. So, it goes without saying that extra hydration and nourishment is paramount. Using an effective, long-lasting moisturiser that rehydrates the skin and prevents further moisture loss will counteract the drying effects of winter. Even better, add a nourishing serum into your daily skincare ritual.

Add a Winter Serum

We love the light, silky Obagi Daily Hydro-drops™, a weightless formula that can be used on its own or under bestselling Obagi moisturisers, Obagi Hydrate® and Obagi Hydrate Luxe®.

This innovative, hydrating serum harnesses the properties of anti-inflammatory Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) and rich natural, protective antioxidants, Abyssinian Oil and Hibiscus Oil by suspending them using patented microfluidic Isoplentix™ technology. This means that each droplet has been individually made and suspended to preserve it in the purest form until you apply it.

Obagi Daily Hydro-Drops™ also contains Omega-9 and Omega-6 Fatty Acids which are highly supportive of the skin’s natural barrier. Phytosterols also work to defend the skin from sun damage and the visible signs of premature ageing like fine lines and wrinkles. All in all, it’s an incredibly soothing, nourishing, powerful serum that neutralises damaging free radicals whilst infusing the skin with a mighty dose of nourishing, active compounds. After use, expect skin to feel hydrated, healthy, and more youthful.

Use a Long-Lasting Moisturiser

Obagi Hydrate® and its night-time companion, Obagi Hydrate Luxe® are ground-breaking moisturisers that are clinically proven to deliver continuous hydration for up to 8 hours. It’s all down to an advanced ingredient called Hydromanil™ which forms a tight matrix across the surface of the skin. The benefit of this is two-fold since it prevents moisture from evaporating from the skin’s surface whilst capturing water molecules at the same time and continuously releasing nourishing compounds into the skin. Make these part of your daily skincare routine and reap the benefits of hydrated, nourished, uber radiant skin.

Invest in a Winter Cleanser

Choosing a moisture-rich cleanser rather than your bog-standard type or a harsh soap will also increase hydration levels and retain moisture. For a wonderfully soothing, creamy gel cleanser containing components that effectively remove makeup, dirt, and oil residue as well as attracting and retaining moisture, it must be Obagi Nu-Derm® Fx Gentle Cleanser.

With cleansing Oat Amino Acids and antioxidant Aloe to negate harmful sun damage, this is one cleanser that goes over and above the usual job description. Not forgetting that it contains Panthenol, a well-known moisture retainer that works by attracting moisture and preventing water from evaporating through the outer layers of skin.

And it wouldn’t be right if we didn’t mention Glycerin, another celebrated humectant, that brings even more moisture to the party. Expect deeply cleansed skin that looks glowing and nourished on the outside.

Winter Skincare Tips To Stay Hydrated

winter skincare

The cold, dry winter air can leave skin feeling thirsty, sensitive, itchy and in the worst cases, flaky or even cracked. Ouch!

Now is definitely the time for pre-emptive action to prevent winter dryness and its nasty side-effects. Whilst it can seem daunting, it’s relatively simple to keep skin in tip-top condition throughout the season. With some extra moisture and nourishment incorporated into your daily routine, skin will remain optimally hydrated and supple.

Why Does Skin Suffer in Winter?

It might be the season of goodwill, but make no mistake, skin is constantly under attack during the cold spell.

It’s because the brisk outside air doesn’t retain moisture well, meaning there’s lower humidity and those arctic, blustery winds can leave skin feeling utterly raw. Not to mention that UV rays are still a threat, especially when it snows. Reflecting off the white stuff makes them all the more harmful and damaging to skin cells.

But there’s no escape inside either because central heating loves to suck the moisture out of the air and your skin too. Even simple luxuries like a hot bath or sitting by the fire dry the skin out. One thing you can’t do at this time of year is let your guard down.

1. Keep Drinking

Keeping your body hydrated on the inside and out is crucial to combat winter dryness. You might not feel the need to drink much water during winter but it’s as important now for skin and body health, as at any time. Try one of those bottles that shows you how much to drink throughout the day or even having a cup of warm water is better than no water.

2. Warm Showers and Baths

The idea of having a long hot soak in a bath on a cold winter’s day seems blissful. It’s better for your skin if you stick with warm baths or showers and not spend too long in them either, as this will help to prevent your delicate skin from drying out. And if your skin does go red when you get in, it’s a sure sign that the temperature’s too darn hot.

3. Use a Long-lasting Moisturiser

To keep skin cells nourished from the inside out, it’s important to use a longer lasting, dermatologist tested moisturizer like Obagi Hydrate®. Clinically proven to deliver continuous hydration for up to 8 hours, its amazing efficacy can be attributed to a cutting-edge ingredient called Hydromanil™. These molecules are able to form a matrix across the surface of the skin, preventing moisture loss, whilst simultaneously capturing water molecules and continuously releasing nourishing compounds into the skin. There are also other enriching natural ingredients including shea butter, mango butter and avocado oil to soften and quench dehydrated skin. The hypoallergenic, non-irritating formula makes it ideal for dry and sensitive winter skin.

4. Try a Humidifier

Investing in a humidifier for your home or workplace is one way to add moisture back to dry winter air. Use it in the room where you spend the most amount of time to get the maximum benefit.

5. Change Your Cleanser

At this time of year, it’s best to use a gentler, creamier cleanser or one that contains active components that help to retain moisture. Obagi Nu-Derm® Fx Gentle Cleanser is a soothing gel formulation that effectively removes makeup, dirt, and oil residue, without loss of moisture.

Oat Amino Acids have cleansing properties, whilst antioxidant Aloe, counteracts damage done by UV rays. But the real secret behind this cleanser’s wintertime credentials is that it contains an effective combination of nourishers and moisture retainers.

Panthenol helps skin to hold onto moisture and decreases the amount of water that evaporates through the outer layers of skin. Glycerin is also in there, acting as a humectant, bringing much-needed moisture. With a plethora of active ingredients, it’s no wonder that skin is left perfectly cleansed, looking radiant and primed for follow-on products.

6. Wear Sunscreen

Although sunscreen is regularly omitted from winter skincare routines, it’s still recommended by The Skin Cancer Foundation. That’s because even on grey days, the sun’s UV rays can damage our skin. Even more so when there’s snow on the ground because it reflects off the white stuff.

Apply the sheer Obagi Sun Shield Matte™ SPF50 as your last step in your morning skincare ritual, prior to make-up. With broad spectrum protection from both UVA and UVB rays, you can relax, safe in the knowledge that your skin is fully protected.

Harnessing advanced technology, protection is threefold with Zinc Oxide deflecting UV rays, and Homosalate and Octisalate absorbing and releasing harmful radiation.

Winter Stock Up: Which Products You Need To See You Through The Change In Seasons

winter skincare

Have you noticed that your skin seems to be drinking up moisturiser like there’s no tomorrow? You have! Well, rest assured you’re not alone. Thirsty skin is a sure sign of the weather turning colder. And as the trees drop their leaves, the temperature dips and the days get shorter, it sends a very clear signal that winter is not so far away.

The emergence of the coldest season might be gradual, but its effects can already be felt. Not to mention, a multitude of winter skin issues like dry skin, a dull complexion, and chapped lips.

Thank goodness that Obagi® are on hand to help with products that suit your seasonal needs. With a thirty-year legacy, producing scientifically led, clinically proven skin care products, you can rest assured that skin radiance will soon be restored, and everything will, once again, be grand.

Winter Skincare

When it gets colder, the skin on our face and body often becomes drier. The reason is that cold air doesn’t retain moisture as well as warm air. Couple that with central heating, another moisture stripper, churning out heat on full-belt, and our poor skin doesn’t stand much of a chance.

That said, you don’t need to panic and change your whole skincare routine. After all, your skin type is still the same, but it’s a good idea to add in extra hydration and a boost of nourishing ingredients.

Obagi Winter Products

Obagi Daily Hydro-Drops™

Obagi Daily Hydro-Drops™ is an innovative facial serum with a wonderfully light, silky texture that hydrates, prevents water loss and floods skin with a multitude of nourishing ingredients. It’s packed full of active components including Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) and rich natural antioxidants, Abyssinian Oil and Hibiscus Oil, that are suspended using patented microfluidic Isoplentix™ technology.

This means that each droplet is made individually and suspended to preserve its purest form until the time of application. An unbelievably hydrating serum, this is perfect for dry and sensitive skin because Isoplentix™ technology removes the need for unnecessary emulsifiers that can irritate sensitive skin.

With additional Omega-9 and Omega-6 Fatty Acids to support the skin’s natural barrier and phytosterols to protect skin from sun damage, this is a daily hydrator that works deeply. Skin remains optimally moist throughout the day, free-from damage caused by harmful free radicals, beautifully radiant and with continued use, looks more youthful too.

Brimming with hero ingredients, you can rely on Shea Butter, Mango Butter and Avocado Oil to intensely nourish your complexion whilst key biomimetic peptides have a powerful anti-ageing action. Hydromanil™ prevents water loss by creating a seal to hold water in the layers of the skin, gradually delivering nourishment from active compounds to guarantee longer-lasting hydration.

SPF in Winter

It might not have occurred to you to use an SPF during the coldest season, but UV rays are harmful all year around, so it’s still essential to complete your winter skincare routine with a facial sunscreen.

Even more so if there’s snow about, because the sun’s rays are especially damaging when reflected off the white powder. That’s why skiers wear goggles to avoid overexposure and the detrimental effects it has on eye health. So, in the same way, you need that extra level of protection for skin. To cover all SPF eventualities, we strongly recommend that you apply Obagi Sun Shield Matte™ SPF50, a sheer, matte, extremely high UV protector, suitable for all seasons.

The remarkable efficacy of this product can be attributed to a superhero trio of ingredients. Zinc Oxide is the deflector of UV rays, while Homosalate and Octisalate, the absorbers which release harmful radiation. Perfect for all types of skin, including oily skin, this next-level formulation offers broad spectrum protection from both UVA and UVB rays and it won’t block pores either.

Vitamin C for Winter Skin Radiance

Lastly, but absolutely, not least, we all need a bit of Vitamin C in winter. If you want the best, choose an Obagi Professional-C® Serum. These powerful vitamin boosters from the Professional-C® portfolio have been formulated with L-ascorbic Acid, the purest form of Vitamin C. Clinically tested with proven results, these serums penetrate the epidermis and dermis significantly better than most Vitamin C serums.

Available in varying strengths, 10%, 15% and 20%, Professional-C® Serums leave skin noticeably more radiant, provide impressive antioxidant protection against nasty wintry external aggressors like wind, snow and the cold and can be used to target fine lines and wrinkles. Add this to your daily routine now to ensure you maintain luminous skin during the bleakest time of year.
