The ultimate ingredients to prevent premature ageing

Premature ageing

Premature ageing is something a lot of women and men worry about. We all know we’ll age and wrinkles will form, but when that happens earlier than we expect, we try everything in our power to counter it. Inevitably, everybody will reach an age from where fighting ageing is useless. But before that time comes, there are definitely ways to slow down the ageing process, to keep you looking youthful for longer.

Are you looking to prevent signs of ageing? Keep on reading, because we’re going to share our top skincare secrets all about the best products to prevent premature skin ageing.

What is premature skin ageing?

First, let’s dive into some background information about the ageing process of skin. As discussed, we all know that ageing is inevitable. So when can we speak of ‘premature’ ageing? This is when signs of ageing, such as wrinkles and lines, occur before the age of 35. In some cases, there is little you can do about ageing. It might be a case of genetics; however, the right skincare products can help to prevent or reduce the signs of premature ageing effectively – what’s not to love!

What are the signs of premature skin ageing?

The way in which premature ageing shows on your skin will vary. However, we’ve listed the most common signs of premature skin ageing. These include sun spots, inflammation or hyperpigmentation, wrinkles or sagging and lines.

Sun spots

As a result of years of sun exposure, you will likely have some sun spots, also called age spots, on your skin. Sun spots are hyperpigmented darker spots and may appear in your face, but also on your arms, hands or décolletage. This sign of premature ageing is very easy to prevent. How, you may ask? By protecting your face from the sun every day. Every single day, if you haven’t before, make Summer 2021 the time to start! Use a good sunscreen SPF or moisturiser with SPF to protect your skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays. Do this without exception, both in summer and winter. Even though you might not be able to see the sun on a cloudy winter day, your skin will still be exposed to UV radiation.

Inflammation and hyperpigmentation

Other problems that often occur most on the chest as we get older are inflammation and hyperpigmentation. Similar to sun spots, inflammation and hyperpigmentation are caused by frequent and unprotected exposure to the sun. This, once again, shows how important it is to use an SPF all year around.

Wrinkles or sagging

One of the most prevalent problems when getting older is developing more wrinkles. As you age your skin will produce less collagen. This is the protein that gives your skin its shape, elasticity and structure. The result?

Your skin won’t bounce back as much and as a result, it will lose its tightness, usually on eyelids, arms, throat and chin – but have no fear, this a gradual process and Obagi Medical® have a great range of products to encourage collagen production.

Obagi ELASTIderm® products help to support skin elasticity and collagen production, so you can bounce back from the signs of ageing. This results in firmer-looking skin.

Lines

This might be the most difficult one, as it’s not solely caused by ageing. Lines will show on your face when you start to get older, but also when you smile, frown or have to squint your eyes when looking into the sun. Everybody has lines. Instead of hating them and trying everything in your power to get rid of them, you should embrace them, after all, they mark all the times you’ve smiled and enjoyed life!

That being said, if you’d like to reduce either fine or deep lines then the Obagi ELASTIderm products will help you to do this, helping your skin feel firmer and making you feel more confident.

Which ingredients help to reduce signs of premature ageing?

When looking for skincare products that will help to reduce or prevent premature skin ageing, it’s important to use the right ingredients. There are certain ingredients that are used in skincare products that have a big impact on signs of premature skin ageing. Vitamin C (sometimes referred to as L-Ascorbic Acid) is by far the most important ingredient to help reduce wrinkles, hyperpigmentation and lines. The Obagi Professional-C® products use Vitamin C as their main ingredient. Because this is a natural ingredient, that is found in fruits for example, it is very beneficial and healthy for you and your skin. Another important ingredient is Retinol. Retinol is a type of retinoid, which is also known as Vitamin A. Retinol improves the skin complexion and texture and is therefore an effective ingredient to use for anti-ageing products.

OBAGI HYDRATE LUXE

Signs of Ageing

Meet OBAGI360® Retinol 0.5, your new secret weapon to fight the signs of ageing. If you’re wondering why, it’s because it speeds up cellular turnover. In turn, this increases collagen production in the dermis. With continuous use, skin elasticity is improved, and fine lines, wrinkles, and crow’s feet are smoothed out. OBAGI360® Retinol 0.5 has been carefully formulated to smooth skin texture, brighten skin and target fine lines and wrinkles, with minimal irritation. When massaged into the skin, the retinol in OBAGI360® Retinol 0.5 is converted to retinoic acid, which effectively reduces the appearance of skin ageing and prevents future skin damage. Not only that, but this multi-purpose product also keeps pores clearer, reducing the likelihood of acne, and diminishes sun-damage and pigmentation.

If retinol is not your thing, try our most clinically studied product in 10 years instead, Obagi ELASTIderm® Facial Serum. It’s so effective that 100% of participants in a 12-week clinical trial said that their skin looked firmer after use. Bi-Mineral Contour Complex™, creates new elastin in the skin, converting and organising it for optimum results. This serum’s been specifically formulated to improve skin elasticity and target the signs of ageing, fine lines, wrinkles, crepiness, and sagging skin. After use, you’ll see real results, glowing skin, improved elasticity, and diminished fine lines and wrinkles.

OBAGI ELASTIDERM FACIAL SERUM

Obagi ELASTIderm® Eye Cream

As we age, collagen and elastin deplete, and skin becomes thinner and less resilient. Eventually, fine lines and wrinkles appear around the eye area. It’s the most noticeable area of the face, so these tell-tale ageing signs can knock confidence and self-esteem.  Don’t feel defeated by this natural ageing process though. Obagi ELASTIderm® Eye Cream is a unique formulation for the delicate skin located around the eye targeting fine lines, wrinkles, and crow’s feet. Using the patented Bi-Mineral Contour Complex™, which combines zinc and copper with malonate, this eye cream supports the three stages of developing healthy Elastin: create, convert and organise. Within two weeks, skin is noticeably more resilient, tighter and fine lines, wrinkles and crow’s feet are visibly diminished. If you’d like to get the bounce back into the skin around your eyes, look no further than Obagi ELASTIderm® Eye Cream.

ELASTIDERM EYE TREATMENT CREAM

Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation, dark spots and sunspots are caused by the overproduction of melanin. Although UV damage is often the main contributor, hormonal changes and genetics can also play a part. If you’re concerned about these, Obagi has just the solution. After cleansing and toning, apply 5-7 drops of Obagi-C® Fx Clarifying Serum and massage into the affected area. It’s a clinically proven formulation to lighten and brighten skin. This lightweight serum contains 7% Arbutin, a key ingredient to counteract hyperpigmentation and even out skin complexion. Harnessing the benefits of L-ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) as well, this product has powerful antioxidant properties, which minimise signs of ageing. Benefit from healthy, radiant and brightened skin. You won’t be disappointed.

Is Retinol Right For Your Skin?

Retinol

We’re shining a light on this powerhouse ingredient, so you can find out!

There’s no doubt about it. Retinol is a powerful product, often shrouded in an air of mystique. Whilst this often-hailed miracle ingredient has been clinically proven to reduce wrinkles, not everyone’s convinced. Could such a potent ingredient be too much for your skin to handle? Or will it unleash a more youthful complexion? We tackle the myths about Retinol and present the real facts about the product that’s on the rise.

What is Retinol?

Retinol is a form of Vitamin A that’s suitable for use on the skin. It comes from a group of Vitamin A derivatives named Retinoids.

Low strength Retinol can be purchased over the counter, without a prescription. Whereas, another form, Tretinoin is more powerful and is prescribed by a medical professional.

How Does Retinol Work?

Retinol is applied topically. It speeds up cellular turnover, which keeps pores clear and therefore reduces the likelihood of blemishes or acne.  It also increases collagen production in the dermis. Like a true skin saviour, skin elasticity is improved, smoothing out fine lines, wrinkles, and crow’s feet. Texture is smoother, more even in tone, and skin appears brighter and more youthful.

Why Use Retinol?

There’s so much talk about Retinol because it can tackle a multitude of skin concerns. It can be used to target:

  • Acne
  • Pigmentation
  • Sun Damage
  • Ageing

Obagi has conducted many clinical studies into the benefits of retinol. A picture paints a thousand words – you can view before and after photos that clearly demonstrate a visible improvement, evidencing a clearer complexion and diminished fine lines and wrinkles, especially when used alongside the Obagi Nu-Derm Fx System.

Can Retinol Damage Your Skin?

It’s the million-dollar question. But contrary to some of the scaremongering touted on the internet, Retinol is completely safe when used correctly, your skin needs to build up tolerance to achieve the best results, so although it might be tempting to go for the highest strength, start skin and work your way up to the higher retinol concentration products.

Since it’s a powerful product, be in no doubt that it can take your skin a while to adjust. This is where the horror stories tend to evolve from. In reality, the side-effects may be irritated skin, redness or dryness. So, you might experience short term irritations whilst your skin gets used to it, but it won’t cause damage.

You’re also more likely to experience some minor irritation if you’ve not used Retinol before. Additionally, if you use too much, too quickly, it’s more likely to result in unwanted side-effects. As skin gets more used to Retinol, these normally disappear within a matter of a few weeks.

There are some cautions. If you suffer from Rosacea or have very sensitive or irritated skin, then this may not be the right ingredient for you. Retinol can make your skin more sun-sensitive so always use a factor 30 SPF on your skin when using Retinol and limit time in the sun. OBAGI360 Hydrafactor® SPF30 is the perfect companion to our Retinol products, ensuring full UVA and UVB protection for your skin. As always, check with your GP or dermatologist if you have concerns.

How to Use the OBAGI Retinol Range?

OBAGI offers Retinols in varying strengths. So, whether it’s your first experience with Retinol or you’ve already used it, we’ve got a solution for you.

Our advice is always to begin with a low strength Retinol and gradually build-up, allowing your skin time to get used to it.

If you’re new to Retinol, you might like to try OBAGI360® RETINOL 0.5. It’s gentle, and improves complexion, smoothing and brightening the skin clinical. Obagi takes skin irritation seriously and has carried out skin trials to assess irritation after 3 weeks to ensure that this product is minimally irritating.

Obagi Retinol 0.5

Alternatively, try SUZANOBAGIMD Retivance® Skin Rejuvenating Complex. This Retinol Serum uses Retinaldehyde, a gentler Vitamin A precursor of Retinoic Acid. Retinaldehyde is tolerated well by different skin types making it suitable for sensitive or delicate skin. If your skin didn’t tolerate a Retinol product so well, try this alternative. The scientifically advanced formula is the next generation in skincare and uses a three-step process. It begins by removing impurities so that a clear base is left, enabling other products to work more effectively. The Retivance complex also actively protects the skin from harmful UV rays, minimising signs of ageing. If that’s not enough, it’s powerful combination of ingredients also renews and rejuvenates the complexion, leaving skin looking brighter and more youthful.

Obagi Retivance Skin Rejuvenating Complex

For optimal results, use your OBAGI Retinol® product after cleansing with OBAGI360® Exfoliating Cleanser. Pat your face dry. Then use a pea sized amount of either OBAGI Retinol 0.5®, or SUZANOBAGIMD® Retivance Skin Rejuvenating Complex. Very gently smooth it onto your skin until it’s been fully absorbed. A good moisturiser afterwards should be used to hydrate and protect the skin’s barrier. Try one of our ultra-nourishing moisturisers, Obagi Hydrate®, Obagi Hydrate Luxe® or if you like to include a moisturising serum too, Obagi Daily Hydro-Drops™. These products are clinically proven to deliver immediate results and improve skin moisture retention over 8 hours.

It’s All in the Formula: Retinol

OBAGI360® Retinol 0.5

Ah retinol. If you are already a skincare junkie, you will probably already be having a long-standing love affair with this hero ingredient. And if you are new to skincare, well let me introduce you to the newest staple in your bathroom cabinet: retinol.

Retinol is one of those skincare ingredients that has been widely tested and has been shown to actually reverse the signs of aging, no gimmicks needed! Skincare professionals, celebrities and skincare junkies alike have all experienced the anti-ageing effects including the reduction of those pesky fine lines and wrinkles. So if you are searching for a solution that will keep those crows feet and worry lines at bay, look no further than Obagi Retinol 1.0, Obagi Retinol 0.5 or SUZANOBAGIMD Retivance® Skin Rejuvenating Complex.

With so many questions and misunderstandings surrounding retinol skincare, we are here to debunk the myths and help you on your way to a more youthful complexion! So without further ado…

What does Obagi Retinol do?

Retinol is a wonder skincare treatment that is the main active ingredient in OBAGI360® Retinol 0.5 and the SUZANOBAGIMD Retivance® Skin Rejuvenating Complex. The beauty of including this skincare ingredient in the Obagi line is that it targets the main visible signs of ageing including pigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles, uneven skin tone, visible pores, texture and even acne.

With regular application, retinol skincare will speed up the natural turnover of drier and more pigmented superficial skin cells, helping to reveal new skin cells and thereby producing an overall more youthful and glowing complexion. The application of Obagi Retinol will also increase the skin’s natural production of collagen, helping to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. But the benefits don’t stop there. Retinol cream even stimulates the production of new blood vessels in the skin which will improve your natural skin colour. Including retinol in your regular skincare routine is a trick you definitely don’t want to miss!

skincare habits

How do you use Obagi Retinol?

With all of the wonderful skin benefits of retinol, it can be tempting to slather this on your skin morning, noon and night, and we don’t blame you! However, retinoids can cause skin dryness and irritation to begin with so it is recommended to introduce retinol into your daily skincare rotation slowly, and build up as your skin becomes more tolerant. If you are new to retinol, begin by applying it at night once a week, then twice a week and so on until your skin is comfortable with nightly application.

After thoroughly cleansing your skin, use a pearl-size amount and gently smooth Obagi Retinol to your face, neck (and hands if you wish) until fully absorbed. But don’t forget to apply a generous amount of SPF during the day, the newer skin cells that retinol reveals can be particularly sensitive to sunlight.

At what age should you start using retinol?

This is one of the most frequently asked questions about retinol and there really is no definitive answer. Previously it has been recommended to start using retinol in your early 30’s, but many women are incorporating it into their regular routine in their 20’s in a bid to keep those early signs of ageing at bay. And if you haven’t already started, fret not, it is never too late to feel retinol’s benefits.

Is it okay to use retinol every night?

After building up tolerance it is absolutely okay to use retinol every night. The Obagi Retinol range includes hydrating Jojoba Oil and Shea butter to keep your skin thoroughly hydrated and soothed, and help to minimise any possible irritation. The addition of Vitamin C and E will also  help to neutralise free radicals whilst you sleep. Win win.

What is a good percentage of retinol?

We are often asked “what is a good retinol to start with?” If you are new to retinol cream or have particularly sensitive skin we recommend starting with the OBAGI360® Retinol 0.5. This concentration is effective at softening fine lines, minimising the visibility of pores and diminishing pigmentation, without being too harsh on the skin.

How to Keep a Youthful Glow in Winter

Obagi Hydrate Luxe®

Achieving a youthful glow can be tricky in the best of times, and made even trickier in the drier and colder months of winter. Thanks to the combination of harsh winds, cold temperatures, hot showers and dry indoor heating, our skin can be left feeling a tad lacklustre and susceptible to dryness, flakiness and an overall dull complexion. The last thing we want over the festive season…

To help you maintain your gorgeous summer glow all year round, we have created your go-to winter skincare guide that will inject instant hydration and life back into your thirsty skin! Hello glow.

1. Double dose of moisture

Finding a hydrating and long-lasting moisturizer is your first step towards a youthful glow in winter. Applying a moisturizer every morning will help replenish any lost hydration and leave a dewy soft-to-the-touch glow. We recommend the Obagi Hydrate® with its 2-in-1 Hydromanil Technology that will deliver hydration for up to 8 hours! Packed with Avocado Oil and Glycerin, this is the ultimate hydrator that will help you achieve your winter skincare goals.

Obagi-Hydrate-Luxe-48g

Sometimes, more is more… And that is true with moisturizing skincare products in winter. To keep your skin topped up on hydration, add in an intense moisturizer to your evening skincare routine. For this we recommend the Obagi Hydrate Luxe®. With its luxurious and ultra-rich balm-like texture, the Obagi Hydrate Luxe® will deliver biomimetic peptides to boost the barrier function of your skin, delivering continuous hydration and overnight moisturisation. Apply this overnight moisturizer to your face and neck to wake up and glow.

2. Ditch the hot showers

There is nothing quite like the feeling of jumping into a hot steamy shower after braving the cold outside. Whilst this guilty pleasure is perfect for warming the cockles of our hearts, our skin isn’t so much of a fan. The heat from the piping hot water can strip our skin from the essential oils that keep our complexion looking dewy and hydrated, leaving our skin vulnerable to dryness and flakiness.

Whilst this winter skincare tip may be hard to implement to begin with, after taking lukewarm showers you will notice a change in how your skin feels post-soak and won’t want to turn back. Say goodbye to red, tight and dry feeling skin, and hello to your new winter glow.

3. Hydrate from within

Across social media it seems like everyone is attempting the gallon-a-day challenge to beat their winter skin woes. But there is science behind the madness! Drinking plenty of water each day not only benefits our overall health, well-being and energy levels, but it also directly impacts our skin. Even if you aren’t managing a gallon, upping your daily fluid intake will help keep your skin moisturised and dewy, fighting off that flakey winter skin.

4. Retinol

One thing that most skincare experts can all agree on is the effectiveness of retinol. If you are well versed in skincare ingredients, chances are you’ve already stumbled upon this wonder ingredient.

Retinol is a Vitamin A and an anti-ageing powerhouse, fighting against fine lines, wrinkles, texture, uneven skin tone and acne. Adding retinol to your winter skincare routine will help to exfoliate your skin on a cellular level, increase cell turnover and collagen production, helping you to not only reveal smoother skin and unclog pores, but also preparing your skin for enhanced absorption of other skincare products. Without first removing the dead surface level of skin cells, you won’t be getting your bang for your buck when it comes to the rest of your winter skincare routine! Adding a retinol to your collection is a worthy investment.

You can explore Obagi’s much-loved retinol skincare products below with varying levels of concentration, so you can find the perfect fit for your skin and its level of sensitivity.

5. Keep topped up on SPF

SPF and sunscreen is synonymous with summer. Whether you are a skincare junkie or a newbie in the world of skincare, the chances are you are already applying skincare regularly during those spicy summer months. But as you pack away your summer wardrobe for the colder months, make sure you aren’t packing away that SPF. Whilst wardrobes rotate seasonally, and skincare products change, one thing should remain your year-round go-to, and that is a daily sunscreen.

Even with the clouds and rain setting in winter 2022 those damaging UVA and UVB rays are still present, causing damage to our skin and causing premature ageing, fine lines, wrinkles, sun spots and in some cases, even skin cancer. By applying SPF year-round you will be helping to maintain that youthful glow in winter, not only this year, but for years to come! Prevention really is better than a cure.

OBAGI360 Hydrafactor® SPF 30 is great if you’re looking for a 2-in-1 moisturiser and sunscreen. It gives you all-day hydration and protects your skin from UV rays. Alternatively, the Obagi Sun Shield Matte™ Broad Spectrum SPF 50 is ideal for providing a broad spectrum of protection for those who want a matte, sheer finish.

Why You Should Start the New Year with A New Skincare Routine

OBAGI NU DERM

Why not start the new year with a new skincare routine from Obagi? New year, new me. That’s the cliché saying, isn’t it? But unsurprisingly this year, it has even more of an impact than any other year due. 2020 hasn’t been the greatest. So why not use 2022 as a completely fresh start starting with your skincare routine? Clear your mind, change up your routine, and make room for the new.

The best way to start that off is by giving yourself time to work on yourself and your wellbeing. If you don’t love your skincare routine at the moment, or you don’t have one at all, then the new year is the opportunity for you to change things up. Give your skin some much-needed TLC by beginning the new year with a new skincare routine. When you feel confident in your own skin, it radiates to other parts of your life, helping you achieve your 2022 goals!

Picking the Right Products to Start the New Year with a New Skincare Routine

Essentially, these skincare systems have already got a plan laid out for you and your specific skincare type. All you need to do is decide your skin type, and what you want your skin to look like and feel. Your skin type will fall into one of the five skin types: normal, oily, combination, dry or sensitive. Once you have decided on your skin type, you will be wondering what kinds of products you will need and whether all the ones part of the Obagi system you have picked are necessary. Most of the time, this again, is tailored to the individual.

You may begin using a few products and decide that your skin isn’t loving all of them, while your friend may use five more products than you and her skin look flawless. Either way, your skincare routine should have three different parts to it: cleansing, toning and moisturising. Check out this post for more in depth information about creating a skincare routine tailored to you.

Start the New Year with A New Skincare Routine: Obagi

For those of you who haven’t tried any Obagi products and want to give them a go in your new skincare routine, the best place to start is by using products from the Obagi Nu-Derm Fx® System. This system has been created to target hyperpigmentation of the skin and reduce any signs of ageing. Here is a list of our recommended Obagi products to start your new year with a new skincare routine:

Obagi Nu-Derm Fx® Gentle Cleanser

At the end of a long day, the first step to unwind should be to physically remove those impurities that have accumulated throughout the day on your skin. Obagi’s gentle cleanser helps to hydrate dry skin too. Massage this product into damp skin, before removing with lukewarm water. SHOP OBAGI NU DERM GENTLE CLEANSER

Obagi Nu-Derm Fx® Toner

The next step is to use a toner on the skin to further hydrate, balance and prep the skin for any other products you will use. The Obagi Toner is alcohol-free and non-drying and is suitable for dry and oily skin. Apply the toner using a cotton pad to your face, making sure to avoid the eye area. SHOP OBAGI NU DERM TONER

Obagi Nu-Derm® Clear FX

Obagi Nu-Derm Fx® Exfoderm

Exfoliating the skin is also an important step to incorporate into your routine. This chemical exfoliant is perfect for those with normal to dry skin, removing those dead skin cells and allowing your new skin to shine through. SHOP OBAGI NU-DERM EXFODERM

Obagi Hydrate® Moisturiser

Following all those previous steps, we come to the final section of your routine, using a moisturiser to lock in all the goodness we’ve already given to your skin. This moisturiser will also target those dry parts of your face and neck. SHOP OBAGI HYDRATE LUXE®
